Sept 7 2009 Italian street signs suck, both in general and when approaching a round-about (of which there is no shortage). When entering a round-about there will be about 20 different locations listed with arrows pointing in various directions and you have no time to read all the signs to find the one you need to follow. So invariably we take the wrong exit and have to do U-turns and reenter, hoping to get it right the second time in. I'm glad there's two of us in the car, one to drive and the other to navigate. BUT we made it through a clusterf&&@ of vehicles onto the ferry to Elba! Some slalom driving later we arrived in Patresi to our hotel.
Elba is really mountainous with some gnarly switchbacks but the sunset over Corsica is well worth it. And the crystal clear warm water (feels like 75 F or so) is a welcome respite from the sweaty-palm driving. We went for a dip at the bouldery beach in Patresi...glad we brought our chacos. I saw some cool fish but it was kinda windy and choppy which made getting in and out a little sketchy.
