Sept 6 2009 With a day left to spare before making our voyage to the island of Elba, Stacy and I decided to head to the region of Maremma- an area with a nature reserve on the coast. On our way we got to see an old car literally explode on the highway, gas flames spewing across the road (sans passengers). Pretty cool. Naturally, traffic backed up but the Italians take it in stride by exiting their cars, cigarettes lit, walking down from way back to get a closer look ( in the US there would be massive police presence...not here..just one.)
After the delay we found a nice hotel (4 stars nonetheless) within a stone's throw of the park and made the last guided trip of the day to the remote beach. Foxes, wild boar, leopard frogs, plenty of deer and some spectacular scenery! Of course we didn't understand a lick of what the guide was saying but she was a motormouth...
